Só para terem a noção, os níveis do mar já estiveram cerca de 120 metros abaixo do que estão actualmente. O mar tinha esse nível há cerca de 18.000 Anos atrás (a última era Glacial), nesse período de tempo cobriam a Terra enormes quantidades de gelo, e até está provado cientificamente que a Europa, a Ásia e a América estavam submersas por enormes porções de água gelada!
Quando a Era Glacial acabou, a maior parte do gelo que cobria o Planeta começou a derreter, sucedendo-se assim um grande aumento dos níveis do mar. Isto deve-se, principalmente, como já sabem, devido às temperaturas elevadas (Aquecimento Global), porém outro dos factores, que influencia bastante este aumento, é a água com temperaturas elevadas, (e o que é tal coisa?). A água, como a maioria dos constituintes deste Planeta, à medida que é aquecida, vai-se “dilatando”, ou seja, “aumenta” o seu volume, por isso, como a água está mais quente, tem um maior volume, e um maior volume, condiciona uma maior elevação dos mares!

E agora perguntam vocês, como é possível tal coisa, se os oceanos estão todos interligados?

O nível do Mar varia consoante inúmeros factores, dentro dos quais, os ventos, as correntes, a pressão do ar as marés e o fluxo de água da Terra para os Oceanos.
Como o Mar tem diversos níveis, para conseguirmos encontrar um “meio-termo”, vários cientistas começaram a medir o “nível do mar relativo”, ou seja o nível do mar relativo junto à costa, porque não é só o nível do Mar que varia, pois a Terra, pode estar a “subir”, ou até mesmo a “descer”, devido aos sedimentos recentemente depositados, que irão a efectuar o processo de sedimentação, como falámos em Ciências.
Com todos estes factores, em certas zonas do Planeta, onde o Mar está a descer, poderá ser benéfico, porém, se desce num lugar, irá subir noutro, e todas as regiões, onde os níveis da água possivelmente irão subir, sofrerão grandes mudanças, tal como, refugiarem se nos locais mais elevados da Terra, o abandono das mesmas regiões, e a morte de muitos seres vivos! Para terem a noção, mais de cerca de 100 milhões de pessoas vivem em Terras que ficam até um metro do nível do Mar, portanto imaginem se o nível do Mar aumentar um metro! Seria uma catástrofe. Contudo, a derradeira questão, imposta pela Humanidade, é, o que está a acontecer ao volume da água oceânica, em todo o Mundo. O principal factor, que nos dará a resposta a esta pergunta, é a quantidade existente de água, em todos os Glaciares do Mundo, que a pouco e pouco se estão a derreter, especialmente na Gronelândia e na Antárctica.
